How search understands your photos

Keepr uses AI for two things — finding photos you describe in words, and spotting near-identical shots — and both run on open models inside Keepr's own systems. Your photos are not sent to OpenAI, Google or any other AI company, they are never used to train a model, and Keepr does no face recognition. Describe-it search is part of the larger storage plans; searching by album, date, person who uploaded and media type works on every plan.

"Is an AI looking at my children's photos?" is a fair question with a good answer, but the good answer has details in it, so here they are.

What the AI is for#

Two things:

Finding things. So you can search for "beach" or "birthday cake" instead of scrolling through four years by date.

Spotting near-identical shots. So eight photos of the same moment collapse into one tile instead of burying the rest of your day. See Duplicate stacks.

Where it runs#

On Keepr's own infrastructure, using open models Keepr runs itself.

There is no third-party AI service in the path. Your photos aren't sent to OpenAI, to Google, or to anyone else for analysis. Nothing you upload is used to train a model — these models are pretrained and only ever run.

Some of that work happens on a second Keepr server rather than the main one, because it's computationally heavy. That's still Keepr's own system, not another company. We say "your photos stay within Keepr's systems" rather than "photos never leave our server", because the second sentence would be technically false and we'd rather be exact.

No face recognition#

Keepr doesn't identify people in photographs. There's no face grouping, no "who is this?", and no per-person albums built by a model.

That's true today rather than a permanent commitment — if it ever changes it will come with its own explanation and its own choice, not quietly.

Searching in your own language#

If you search in Polish, German or any of the other supported languages, your search words are translated to English before searching, because the image model understands English best.

Your photos aren't translated, moved or sent anywhere. The translation runs on Keepr's own servers using open models, the same way the image search does.

Locations stay offline#

If your camera recorded where a photo was taken, Keepr can turn those coordinates into a city and country so you can search for "Spain".

That lookup happens entirely inside Keepr, offline. Your coordinates are never sent to a mapping service — which is unusual, and worth knowing, because location is the most sensitive thing in a photo's metadata.

Which plans have it#

Describe-it search is part of the larger storage plans — the same line that unlocks keeping print-ready originals. If you're in a Family Hub on a plan that clears it, you get it through the hub even if your own personal plan is smaller.

Everyone, on every plan, can search by album, by who uploaded a photo, by date and by whether it's a photo or a video.

What's stored about a photo#

To make searching work, Keepr keeps a mathematical representation of what a picture looks like — not a description in words, not a list of names, and not something a person can read back as an image. It's used to compare pictures to your search terms and to each other, and for nothing else.

Common questions

Are my photos sent to OpenAI or Google?
No. There is no third-party AI service anywhere in the path. The models are open models Keepr runs itself.
Does Keepr recognise faces?
Not today. No face recognition ships in the product.
Are my photos used to train AI?
No. The models are pretrained and only ever run. Nothing you upload trains anything.
What happens when I search in another language?
Your search words — not your photos — are translated to English first, because the image model understands English best. That translation also runs on Keepr's own servers.
Does the location on my photos get sent anywhere?
No. Turning coordinates into a city and country happens inside Keepr using an offline lookup. Your coordinates are never sent to a mapping service.
