Turning old prints into digital photos

In the Keepr phone app, Old prints in the upload window opens your phone's own scanner. It finds each print's edges, crops and straightens it on the phone, and the photos upload into your album dated by the decade or year you choose. Keepr can also fix faded colours and always keeps the scan as the original. Ten photos a month are free, and any paid plan makes it unlimited.

In the Keepr phone app, Old prints turns printed photos into digital ones. Your phone's camera finds the edges of each print, crops it and straightens it, and the photos go into your album like any upload.

Where to find it#

Open an album, tap Add Photos, and choose Old prints. It is in the phone app only, on the latest version. A computer has no camera to scan with, so it does not show there.

How it works#

  1. Roughly when? Pick a decade, Older, Not sure, or type an exact year. It applies to every print you scan this time.
  2. Open camera. Lay each print flat near a window and point the camera at it. The scanner finds the edges and takes it. Take one print per photo.
  3. Check them. Tap a print to change its year or remove it. Tap Scan more to add more.
  4. Add the photos. They join the upload window, and upload like any other photos.

On iPhone, Apple's camera lets you pick a filter (Color, Grayscale, Black and White, Photo) before you finish. Keepr keeps what you chose.

The date on a scanned print#

A print has no date of its own, so Keepr uses the one you chose. The photo shows the decade or the year, like 1980s or 1984, with Scanned print. If you chose Not sure, it says Date unknown and sorts by the day you scanned it.

Because a decade is not a day, scanned prints are left out of On this day, circle stories and Who else was there?. If you later set an exact date on a print, it counts like any dated photo.

Fixing faded colours#

Fix faded colours is on unless you switch it off. A few minutes after the upload, Keepr evens out the colours of each print, which brings back contrast and takes away the red or yellow tint of an old photo. Black and white prints stay black and white. It does not remove scratches, dust or tears, and it adds nothing that was not in the photo.

The scan is kept as the original. In the photo viewer, switch between Restored and Original. Both count toward your storage.

How many you can scan#

Without a plan, you can add 10 photos a month from the scanner, and the scanner screen shows how many are left before you start. Any paid plan makes it unlimited. A print you remove or retake before adding does not count. The count starts again on the 1st of each month.

Privacy#

The scan runs on your phone: Google's scanner on Android, Apple's document camera on iPhone. Keepr sends no photo to an AI company for this. After that, the photos upload and are stored like the rest of your library.

Common questions

Is my photo sent to an AI service?
No. The scan happens on your phone, in Google's scanner on Android and Apple's document camera on iPhone. Fixing faded colours runs on Keepr's own server and is a colour adjustment, not an AI model.
Does it remove scratches?
No. It brings back faded colours and contrast. It does not remove scratches, dust or tears.
Can I scan a whole album page at once?
Not yet. Take one print per photo.
